Founded on October 1, 1888, the university was built between 1924 and 1934 with financial support from brothers Evlogi Georgiev and Hristo Georgiev (whose sculptures now appear on its facade). It covers an area of 18,624 m² and a total of 324 halls.
The university has 16 faculties and three departments, where more than 21,000 students receive their education.
